The elegant 1823
Danforth Inn in Portland's historic West End, where stars such as Bruce Springsteen and Drew Barrymore held their weddings, is another victim of Maine's skyrocketing property taxes. The inn may have been able to compete with several new hotels which have been built in the area, but last year's property tax increase from $9,000 to $25,000 contributed to the inn's inability to turn a profit, and the owners closed its doors for good at the end of this summer.
