Get Strong, Get Flexible, Get Healthy, and Find Balance

Not too many years ago, yoga was relatively unfamiliar to many Americans. Today this 5000-year-old practice, which originated in the Orient, is a vastly popular activity in the US that has earned the praise of the American Medical Association for its health benefits for people of all ages and body types. In this article you'll find basic information about yoga and, on Page Two, places in southern and midcoast Maine where you can take yoga lessons.

Practicing yoga is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself, physically, mentally, and spiritually. It's gentle enough for almost anybody, regardless of your age or fitness. Good yoga teachers know how to modify poses to fit the limitations of each student. In fact, there are even classes in chair yoga. If you're looking for a good workout, yoga can also be as physically challenging as you want it.

What IS Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice that uses breathing techniques, poses, relaxation, and meditation to balance mind, body, and spirit by creating energy, strength and mental clarity. There are several different kinds of yoga, including Hatha, Ananda, Kripalu, Ashtanga, Iyenger, and others.

What Can It Do For Me?

According to the American Medical Association, over 75% of all diseases are stress related. Hundreds of studies have documented the effectiveness of yoga in reducing stress and anxiety. Other proven benefits include:

  • increases strength
  • creates energy
  • builds and tones muscle
  • improves focus and concentration
  • increases flexibility
  • improves posture
  • reduces blood pressure
  • improves memory
  • relieves pain
  • improves digestion
  • improves balance

Yoga improves many specific medical conditions, including:

  • high blood pressure
  • arthritis
  • osteoporosis
  • poor circulation
  • back pain
  • depression
  • headaches
  • breathing problems

What Should I Look For In a Yoga Class or Instructor?

The most important thing is to find an experienced yoga instructor who is registered with the Yoga Alliance, a self-governing body of yoga instructors who have met a set of standard training requirements. The instructor should never encourage you to go into a pose to the point of experiencing pain, but rather should encourage you to know your own limitations and to strive for gradual improvement. Yoga should not be competitive and you shouldn't compare yourself to anybody else in the class.

Before signing up for a class, ask the yoga instructor what kind of yoga he or she teaches and what level the class is (beginner, advanced, etc.). Unless you're an experienced yoga practitioner, stay away from so-called "power yoga" made popular by Madonna and others who want to incorporate the poses of yoga with highly intense aerobic exercise.

Where Can I Take a Yoga Class?

Yoga classes are taught at several yoga centers in southern and midcoast Maine, through some adult education programs, and by private teachers. See Page Two of this article for a list of locations and links to their Web sites.
