Portland Chef Named Best Chef in the NortheastSam Hayward of Fore Street Receives Coveted James Beard AwardIf Sam Hayward hasn't already put Portland on the culinary map with his highly successful Fore Street Restaurant, he has certainly done so by being named the 2004 Best Chef in the Northeast by the James Beard Foundation, the nation's number one foodie organization.
Sam Hayward is known for his simple but creative use of Maine foods in his popular restaurant above Standard Baking Company on Fore Street in Portland. He has attracted regional and national attention to southern Maine and has made Fore Street, which he co-owns with Dana Street of Street and Company, a must-visit destination restaurant. Sam is also known for his active involvement in the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Associationm an internationally recognized advocate for organic food. The chefs of Arrows Restaurant in Ogunquit were also jointly nominated for this award. To have two of only five nominations in the northeast go to chefs of Maine restaurants speaks volumes about how far Maine has come in the quality of its food. Fore Street Restaurant, at 288 Fore Street, Portland, Maine, serves dinner from 5:30-10:00 pm Monday through Thursday, until 10:30 Friday and Saturday, and until 9:30 Sunday (10:00 during the summer). Reservations are recommended (call 207-775-2717), especially in summer. |
