Suggested ReadingMaps of MaineTo Manuever around Maine, a Quality Map is a MustWhether you live in Maine or are just visiting, a good, detailed map of Maine can save you time and aggravation. Road signage in Maine is often unclear and you can literally end up going in circles. You can also miss some of the best scenery and most interesting spots in Maine without a good map, especially if you're under the common misconception that to see the real Maine you just stay on Route 1. The opposite is actually true. To see the real Maine, you must leave Route 1.
So, what's an explorer to do? The answer is easy. The best map of Maine is without doubt DeLorme's Maine Atlas and Gazetteer. It's well worth the $20 or so that it will cost (you may save that much in gas in one trip by finding your destinations more quickly). You can find this detailed map of Maine in any Maine bookstore, many gas stations, sporting goods stores, at the DeLorme Map Store just off Interstate 95 in Yarmouth (worth a visit), and in many other Maine stores. You can also order online from DeLorme's Web site. DeLorme's Maine Atlas and Gazetteer is nearly 80 pages of maps detailing the entire state of Maine, including topographic details, lakes, ponds, and streams, boat ramps, campgrounds, prime hunting and fishing spots, dirt roads, and some trails. It also includes city street maps for some of Maine's largest cities, as well as valuable information about unique natural areas, historic sites, hiking trails, lighthouses, parks, nature preserves, wildlife areas, sand beaches, campgrounds, and canoe trips. The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer is 11" x 15-1/2" paperback with a scale of 1/2" = 1 mile. If you're going to be trying to find your way around Portland or another larger town in Maine, you should also pick up DeLorme's Street Map--Greater Portland, a 4" x 9" fold-out map that includes Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Windham, Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Falmouth, Freeport, Gorham, Gray, Long Island, North Yarmouth, Scarborough, and Yarmouth. If you don't like fold-out maps (I don't), DeLorme also publishes Street Atlases in 8" x 11" paperback for Portland, Central Maine (Lewiston-Auburn to Augusta to Waterville), and the Seacoast (Kennebunk to Salisbury, MA).
