If you think you saw Paul Newman or Helen Hunt hanging around Maine in the summer and fall of 2003, you're probably right. They were among the cast members on location here in Maine for the filming of Empire Falls, a made for cable TV movie filmed for HBO. Paul Newman is also the Executive Director.
It seems fitting that the movie Empire Falls, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Camden, Maine author Richard Russo, was filmed in Maine, since the fictional story takes place in a Maine mill town and the author of the book lives in Maine. Besides Paul Newman and Helen Hunt, the movie also stars Newman's wife Joanne Woodward, Ed Harris, Robin Wright Penn, Aidan Quinn, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and includes as many as 1,000 Mainers as extras.
The story is set in a Maine mill town and was filmed in and around Waterville, where Richard Russo lived when he taught at Colby College. Other Maine towns will also be the setting for scenes from the movie, including Kennebunkport.
Russo has also written Mohawk, The Risk Pool, Nobodys Fool, and Straight Man. Nobody's Fool was made into a movie starring Paul Newman and Bruce Willis.
