Queen Mary 2 in Portland Harbor, October

Queen Mary 2 in Portland Harbor, October 9, 2004

Deborah M. Fowles
October 9, 2004 was a day of celebration in Portland as the Queen Mary 2, the largest oceanliner ever built, spent the day in Portland Harbor.

The ship anchored near Fort Gorges and brought passengers into the Old Port on smaller boats. Portland's streets were crowded with cars, buses, and pedestrians enjoying the festival-like atmosphere and admiring the impressive Queen as she dominated Portland harbor.

Live music, water cannons, kite flying, and fireworks kept the estimated 15,000 to 18,000 onlookers entertained.

Queen Mary 2's vital statistics:

  • 151,400 tons
  • 1,132 feet long, 236 feet high
  • 17 decks, as high as a 23-story building
  • ten onboard restaurants
  • luxury two-story apartments
  • five swimming pools
  • planetarium
  • largest ballroom and library at sea
  • $800 million price tag
  • carries 2600 passengers and a crew of 1250

Cunard Cruise Lines is planning another Queen Mary 2 visit to Portland Harbor in 2005, so stayed tuned for more information. In the meantime, take a virtual tour of the Queen Mary 2.
