Maine Winterfest 2006

International Ice-carving Competition and Winter Carnival

From About.com

Dec 2 2006
Mainers know how to enjoy winter weather. When the temperatures plunge, Mainers bundle up and have a celebration. What's the alternative? Hibernating for the winter?

Here's a Maine winter festival that will get you out of the house and enjoying the white cold beauty of winter.

Description: The annual Maine Winterfest, also known as the Maine Snow and Ice Follies, usually takes place simultaneously in Freeport and Falmouth in January. This year, however (2007), it will be held at Point Sebago Resort in conjunction with the State's largest Ice Fishing Derby at the end of February (23rd through the 25th).

Two years ago, the American Bus Association designated this popular winter carnival as one of the Top 100 Events in North America.

Maine Winterfest features a snow and ice-carving competition by professional and amateur snow and ice carvers from around the world, carving giant sculptures related to the year's theme.

When the event is held in Freeport, the ice sculptures line the main street, creating a beautiful walk past the impressive ice sculptures. There's also a winter dance, live concerts, fun and games for all ages, and food.

Location: Point Sebago.
